Welcome to Science Getaways! We offer vacations for people who love learning and want to have fun while expanding their minds.
Science Getaways is the brain child of astronomer and author Phil Plait, and his wife, Marcella Setter. We’ve found that learning about the natural history, geology, and biology of the places we visit makes a vacation more fun and satisfying. Discovering more about your vacation spot always makes the experience better, and it was from this idea that Science Getaways was born.
We decided to create our own vacation company for those who want to add that dimension to their travels. Sure, lying on a beach and dining on great food make for a relaxing vacation, but we think feeding your brain is just as important! That’s why our goal is to provide educational, science-based, freestyle vacations that let you decide how much you want to learn and experience every day.
We know science can be fun: from the eons-old rock beneath your feet to the magnificent stars above your head, science is cool. At Science Getaways, we offer new experiences and the chance to learn about the natural world. Our goal is to bring together science enthusiasts and scientific experts to create a great adventure vacation.
Phil Plait is an astronomer, author, public speaker, and frequent TV science documentary host. His blog, Bad Astronomy, is one of the most popular science blogs on the planet. His two books, Bad Astronomy and Death from the Skies!, are aimed at the general public and have received rave reviews. He also co-wrote and hosted the Discovery Channel show “Bad Universe”, an astronomy program about asteroid impacts, solar storms, and alien life. Phil is currently writing and hosting Crash Course Astronomy, an online educational video series in collaboration with Hank Green and PBS Digital Studios.
Phil is widely in demand as a public speaker, having lectured across the US and internationally. Besides being Science Director for Science Getaways, he’s our main speaker for the events! He’s loved astronomy all his life, and has an infectious enthusiasm and joy of talking about science that makes it fun for everyone.
Marcella Setter is the Director of Operations for Science Getaways. She has worked for manufacturing companies, sales firms, universities and hospitals in different administrative capacities. Tired of the nine-to-five grind, she decided to become an entrepreneur. She brings years of experience organizing events and business administration to Science Getaways. In fact SG was originally her idea! She is the details person, so if you have any questions or need help, you can contact her by email.
